それは南北戦争の時代、女性参政権運動家だったジュリア・ウォード・ハウさんが夫や子どもを戦場に送るのを拒否しようと立ち上がったことにあるといいます。
それから１４０年以上の出兵の歴史を省みながら今、シンディ・シーハンさんは呼びかけます。
『この歴史を終わらせるのは母親が、もうあなた方に自分の息子は渡さないと立ちあがる時なのです』と。
今から１３７年前にジュリア・ウォード・ハウさんが起草した「母の日宣言」を翻訳家でいらっしゃる知人の向井さんが紹介してくださいました。

立ち上がれ、母親達よ
立ち上がれ、愛情深き女達よ
立ち上がれ、信仰の違いを越えて
きっぱりと言おう
大事な問題を、お門ちがいの当局まかせにはしない
殺戮を重ねた夫を、愛撫や喝采で迎えたりはしない
息子達を連れ去って、
慈愛と寛容について母親達が教えてきたすべてのことを忘れさせることは許さない
女達の友愛は国境を越える
だから許しはしない
他国の女の息子を殺すための訓練を、自分の息子に受けさせることは
荒れ果てた大地の底から声が湧きあがり、私達女の声と一つになる
「武器を捨てよ！殺人のための刃は正義のものさしにはならない」
血は不名誉を清めはしない
暴力では何ものも獲得できない
男達が鋤や金どこを捨てて戦場に赴くように
女達よ、家事を捨てて偉大な集会に結集せよ
集まったらまず、女として、死者を追悼しよう
人類という大きな家族が平和のうちに生きることができるように語り合おう
それぞれの時代に、為政者ではなく神の刻印が残されるように
女の友愛と人道の名において、心から呼びかける
国境を越えて女の総会を招集しよう
適当な場所を選び、なるべく早い時期に
諸国の協調と
国家間の諸問題の友好的解決と

家。Julia Ward Howe：1819?1910）。
「ゴンベさんの赤ちゃんがかぜひいた．．」という歌の元歌、リパブリック讃歌の作
詞者。
現在の母の日は、彼女に共鳴したもうひとりの反戦活動家アンナ・ジャービスの娘が
1908年5月10日に母の追悼のため白いカーネーションを供えたのが始まり、だそう
です。訳文が見つからなかったので向井の訳ですが、改善したい箇所もあり、ご意見
歓迎。
男性の方が愛情深くない、というわけではないので、どう受け取られるか、ちょっと
心配です。でもお一人ずつ母親が存在するのでいいか。
それに、戦争は男のすなるもの、でしたが、最近は女も戦場に行ってます。
ライスやヒラリーみたいに好戦的な女性もいれば、マーチン・ルーサー・キングJr.
牧師のように愛を説き、自由への渇望を憎しみで癒すことは求めまい、と呼びかけた男性もいる。

Mother's Day Proclamation
Arise, then, women of this day!
Arise, all women who have hearts,
Whether our baptism be of water or of tears!
Say firmly:
"We will not have great questions decided by irrelevant agencies,
Our husbands will not come to us, reeking with carnage, for caresses and
applause.
Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn
All that we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy and patience.
We, the women of one country, will be too tender of those of another country
To allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs."
From the bosom of the devastated Earth a voice goes up with our own.
It says: "Disarm! Disarm! The sword of murder is not the balance of
justice."
Blood does not wipe out dishonor, nor violence indicate possession.
As men have often forsaken the plough and the anvil at the summons of war,
Let women now leave all that may be left of home for a great and earnest day
of counsel.
Let them meet first, as women, to bewail and commemorate the dead.
Let them solemnly take counsel with each other as to the means
Whereby the great human family can live in peace,
Each bearing after his own time the sacred impress, not of Caesar,
But of God.
In the name of womanhood and humanity, I earnestly ask
That a general congress of women without limit of nationality
May be appointed and held at someplace deemed most convenient
And at the earliest period consistent with its objects,
To promote the alliance of the different nationalities,
The amicable settlement of international questions,
The great and general interests of peace.
